In a grand celebration of officiating talent, the 2024 Referee Abroad Awards have once again recognized exceptional referees from around the world. This annual event honors individuals who exemplify excellence and dedication in officiating, spotlighting their remarkable achievements across international tournaments throughout the season.
One of the event’s most prestigious accolades, the Award in Memory of Alex Castro, is presented yearly to the best referee from outside Europe. This year’s recipient, Ismet Yilmaz from Turkiye, stood out for his outstanding officiating during the Gothia Cup in Sweden, where he earned the Best Referee title. Ismet’s commitment to fair play and professionalism during this single event showcased his exceptional abilities and made him a deserving winner of this prestigious award.
Additionally, the 2024 awards introduced a new category: the Best Up-and-Coming Referee Award. This accolade celebrates young officials showing immense potential. The inaugural recipient, Lachlan Li Chiang from Canberra, Australia, has made a remarkable impression. At just 16 years old, Lachlan officiated at the Italy World Games and IberCup Barcelona, where he was recognized as the Talent of the Tournament at both events, solidifying his bright future in officiating.
While the yearly awards are reserved for a special celebration, other recognitions such as Best Referee, Best Assistant Referee, and Referee Talent Awards are presented at each of our main tournaments. These honors highlight the global reach of refereeing excellence, celebrating top talent and emerging stars. The Referee Abroad organization continues to shine a light on the vital role referees play in maintaining the integrity and spirit of the game.
