For the first time in Referee Abroad’s history, Saint Martin 🇸🇽 is now represented within our international refereeing network, as Daniel Defoe becomes the island’s first official to join our global community.

With referees from more than 80 countries having joined Referee Abroad over the years, Daniel’s journey marks an important new milestone both for our organisation and for Saint Martin’s sporting future.

A proud native of Quartier d’Orléans, Daniel has emerged as one of Saint Martin’s most promising young refereeing talents. His recent international appointment in Portugal, where he represented his island on a major global stage, has generated pride not only within Referee Abroad but also throughout Saint Martin itself.

His progress has attracted significant recognition back home.

President Louis Mussington of the Collectivité of Saint Martin publicly praised Daniel’s achievements, celebrating his journey as an inspiring example for the island’s youth and highlighting the international visibility he is helping bring to Saint Martin through football.

For a territory rarely represented in international officiating circles, Daniel’s rise represents far more than personal success.

“À seulement 21 ans, Daniel Defoe a su s’imposer avec sérieux et détermination, jusqu’à officier lors d’une finale à l’IberCup, l’un des tournois internationaux les plus relevés. Derrière ce parcours, il y a du travail, de la discipline et une vraie passion. Saint-Martin peut être fière de ses talents.”

President of Saint Martin

“Welcoming Daniel as the first referee from Saint Martin into Referee Abroad is a proud and historic moment for us,” said Daniele Curcio, President of Referee Abroad.

“Our mission has always been to create international opportunities for referees from every part of the world, and this milestone shows once again that refereeing talent knows no borders.”

Having begun his refereeing career at just 16 years old, Daniel’s development has been built on dedication, resilience, and a clear ambition to elevate both himself and his home island within the global refereeing landscape.

His story reflects the very foundation of Referee Abroad: creating international pathways for talented referees regardless of geography, background, or federation size.

From some of football’s most established nations to emerging territories taking their very first steps onto the international stage, Referee Abroad continues to prove that officiating excellence can emerge anywhere.

For Saint Martin, this is a breakthrough moment.

For Daniel Defoe, it could be the start of something far bigger.
