It is with a heavy heart that we remember Jack Smith, Chairman of the Norfolk Referees’ Association, a beloved observer, and a cherished part of our Referee Abroad family. Jack was not only an outstanding observer but also a mentor and friend, whose dedication to refereeing touched lives far beyond the field. His influence spanned numerous tournaments in Spain, Portugal, France, Denmark, and Italy, where he shared his passion and wisdom with everyone he encountered, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and professionalism.

Jack’s kindness and humor made him a favorite among his peers. Referee Abroad President Daniele Curcio expressed his deep sorrow, stating, “Jack was more than a brilliant observer; he was a true friend. Over the years, our bond grew beyond the football field. We last shared time together at a tournament in Denmark just two weeks ago, and his unwavering passion for refereeing left an impression on everyone around him. R.I.P Jack Smith; we will all miss you.”

Fellow referees and observers who had the privilege of working with Jack have shared heartfelt tributes that paint a picture of his warmth and unique presence. Derek Hall of Scotland, who was with Jack during his final tournament in Denmark, shared, “Absolutely gutted. A total gentleman and a great friend. I feel privileged to have spent time with him in Esbjerg, where he was in great form and cared deeply about his referees.”

Referees across Europe echo these sentiments. One remarked, “Jack was a fantastic guy, always telling stories, always caring for others. I’m grateful I got to meet him.” Another reflected, “When I get old, I want to be exactly like him. Caring about people, telling stories, and always happy.” Jack’s energy and enthusiasm were unforgettable; at his last tournament, he celebrated by playing darts and sharing tales from his life, bringing laughter to everyone around him.

The news of Jack’s passing has profoundly saddened the refereeing community, with many planning to honor him by wearing black armbands at their next matches. Jack’s legacy of dedication, humor, and unflagging support lives on, inspiring countless referees to carry forward his passion.

Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends. Jack’s memory will continue to inspire us all, a reminder of the bonds and shared commitment that unite us in the world of refereeing. His spirit will be deeply missed, but his contributions will never be forgotten.
