A new milestone was reached this year at IberCup Estoril, as Referee Abroad welcomed its first-ever participant from Moldova. Representing his country with pride, 21-year-old Dumitru Zaharciuc impressed both colleagues and observers with his calm presence, professionalism, and eagerness to grow — qualities that earned him a well-deserved appointment as assistant referee in the U14 final.

Although it was his first international refereeing experience, Dumitru adapted quickly and showed confidence and composure throughout the week. He described the tournament as “awesome”, and said he “had a really good time” both on and off the pitch.

“I picked up helpful tips during the games, especially from the observers,” he shared. “Even matches without them had something to teach me.”

What stood out most was his positive attitude and genuine passion for refereeing.

“These opportunities are great — you get to improve, meet new people, and explore new places. I’ve made friends, gained experience, and I’m already thinking about coming back. Maybe even doing three tournaments in a row next summer!”

Daniele Curcio, President of Referee Abroad, commented:

“We were very happy to finally welcome a referee from Moldova. Dumitru stood out for his attitude and commitment. Moldova had been one of the last UEFA countries never represented at our events, so this was a meaningful step forward.”

With Dumitru’s participation, Referee Abroad has now worked with referees from 78 countries, including 46 UEFA nations — from major footballing countries like Germany, Italy, and England to smaller associations such as Andorra and now Moldova.

A handful of UEFA countries — including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, and San Marino — are still waiting to be represented.

“We hope to welcome referees from every UEFA nation in the near future,” added Daniele. “Our doors are open — and the experience is waiting.”

We look forward to seeing Dumitru and other fellow Moldovan referees again — and to many more firsts still to come.
