The Memorial Day Tournament is one of the premier youth football events held over the Memorial Day weekend in the United States. Hosted in the historic city of Boston, Massachusetts, the tournament brings together talented teams from across North America, providing referees with the opportunity to officiate competitive matches in a professional international environment.
For the fifth consecutive year, Referee Abroad is partnering with US Officials, one of the leading referee organisations in the United States, to provide selected referees with an exceptional international refereeing experience. Work alongside American and international officials, develop your skills, and gain valuable experience in a highly competitive tournament. Beyond the football, you’ll have the opportunity to explore one of the USA’s most iconic cities and experience the unique atmosphere of Memorial Day weekend, making this an unforgettable experience both on and off the pitch.
To qualify, applicants must have at least one year of refereeing experience, be over 18 years old, and come from a country with visa-free entry.
The application process requires referees to provide necessary documentation, including a copy of their passport, referee license, a letter from their federation granting permission to referee, a summary of their refereeing experience, proof of a background check, and a SafeSport training certificate (with a provided course link). Final participation is subject to the approval of all submitted paperwork.
Enjoy the ease and comfort of on-site or nearby lodging during the Memorial Day soccer tournaments in Boston. Last year, referees stayed in charming twin rooms at Babson College, located in a scenic area with fields just steps away. The accommodation included essential amenities such as kitchen facilities, laundry services, and communal spaces, creating a welcoming and community-focused environment.
This year, expect a similarly pleasant experience with university residences that offer not only a comfortable stay but also a vibrant and engaging atmosphere. This setup will enhance your refereeing experience, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the excitement of Memorial Day soccer while enjoying convenient and comfortable accommodations.
While officiating in the Memorial Day tournaments in the Boston area, referees have the chance to explore the city’s rich history and vibrant culture. Walk the iconic Freedom Trail, where you can delve into America’s founding history. Discover the art and culture at the Museum of Fine Arts or enjoy a game at the historic Fenway Park. For a relaxing break, take a stroll along the scenic Charles River Esplanade or wander through the charming Beacon Hill neighborhood.
Just a short drive away, you can experience the maritime allure of Salem or the coastal beauty of Cape Cod. From historical landmarks to culinary delights, Boston and its surrounding areas offer a diverse and enriching experience for referees, making your visit both memorable and enjoyable beyond the soccer fields.
Traveling to Boston for the Memorial Day tournaments is hassle-free with convenient international flight options. Referee Abroad manages all travel arrangements, ensuring a smooth and seamless experience from start to finish. Boston Logan International Airport, a major global hub, offers direct flights from various international destinations, providing easy access to the tournament venues.
No matter where you’re coming from—be it Europe, Asia, or beyond—Referee Abroad will handle your travel logistics, allowing you to focus on the exciting soccer action and enjoy the rich cultural experiences Boston has to offer. A fantastic experience with Referee Abroad, thanks to the opportunity to take part in both the Donosti Cup and the Porto International Cup. Two international tournaments that provided an extraordinary opportunity for both refereeing and personal growth. The professionalism and excellent organisation, together with the opportunity to interact with referees and football communities from different countries, made both experiences truly unique. I highly recommend Referee Abroad to any referee looking to develop, challenge themselves and experience international football. ⚽️🌍Posted on Google![]()

Referee Abroad has been an outstanding experience from start to finish. The entire organisation has a real family feel, and you’re made to feel welcome from the moment you arrive. Everyone—staff, mentors, and fellow referees—is incredibly friendly, supportive, and always willing to help you grow. Despite the warm atmosphere, the setup is also very professional. The communication is clear, the organisation is well structured, and the feedback you receive is genuinely useful for improving your refereeing. The tournaments are run smoothly and you always feel looked after both on and off the pitch. Whether you’re a new referee looking to build confidence or someone with experience wanting to challenge yourself in a different environment, Referee Abroad is a fantastic opportunity. It’s rare to find a programme that combines professionalism with such an inclusive, family-like community — but this one does exactly that. Highly recommended.+2Posted on Google![]()
