The Surf Cup International in Salou is the European sister tournament of the prestigious California Surf Cup, bringing together some of the world’s strongest youth academies—such as FC Barcelona, PSG, Benfica, and Olympique Lyonnais—alongside international club teams from across the globe. Matches are played at the modern Mediterranean Sport Village, offering referees top-quality pitches and facilities on Spain’s Costa Daurada.
For referees, the tournament provides an opportunity to work with assistants and fourth officials in a professional setup, with appointments ranging from group stages to televised finals. Accommodation, meals, and transport between hotel and fields are provided, ensuring officials can focus fully on their development and performance. Beyond refereeing, participants can enjoy Salou’s beaches, nearby attractions like PortAventura, and the cultural heritage of Catalonia.
Referees are accommodated in comfortable local hotels or holiday villages in Salou, offering an enjoyable stay just minutes from both the tournament facilities and the town’s golden beaches. Lodging is provided on a full-board basis, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included, so officials can focus fully on their matches and development. Rooms are typically shared with fellow referees, creating a friendly and international environment where officials can exchange experiences and build lasting connections. The central location of the hotels also makes it easy to explore Salou’s lively atmosphere, seaside promenade, and nearby attractions during free time.
What makes Surf Cup International even more special is its setting on the Costa Daurada, one of Spain’s most picturesque coastlines. Salou is known for its golden sandy beaches, lively promenade, and relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere, offering the perfect balance of sport and leisure. Beyond the town itself, referees can explore the nearby Roman city of Tarragona, enjoy the thrills of PortAventura World, or take a short trip to Barcelona to experience its world-famous architecture, culture, and nightlife. The combination of Salou’s coastal charm and Catalonia’s cultural treasures makes every stay as memorable off the field as it is on it.
Reaching Salou is simple thanks to excellent transport links. Most international referees will arrive by air, with Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) serving as the main gateway, located about an hour from Salou. The smaller Reus Airport (REU), just 15 minutes away, also offers seasonal flights from several European cities. From the airport, regular train, bus, and transfer services connect directly to Salou, making travel to the tournament smooth and straightforward. These options ensure referees can easily access the event while enjoying the flexibility of exploring the wider region.

A fantastic experience with Referee Abroad, thanks to the opportunity to take part in both the Donosti Cup and the Porto International Cup. Two international tournaments that provided an extraordinary opportunity for both refereeing and personal growth. The professionalism and excellent organisation, together with the opportunity to interact with referees and football communities from different countries, made both experiences truly unique. I highly recommend Referee Abroad to any referee looking to develop, challenge themselves and experience international football. ⚽️🌍Posted on Google![]()

Referee Abroad has been an outstanding experience from start to finish. The entire organisation has a real family feel, and you’re made to feel welcome from the moment you arrive. Everyone—staff, mentors, and fellow referees—is incredibly friendly, supportive, and always willing to help you grow. Despite the warm atmosphere, the setup is also very professional. The communication is clear, the organisation is well structured, and the feedback you receive is genuinely useful for improving your refereeing. The tournaments are run smoothly and you always feel looked after both on and off the pitch. Whether you’re a new referee looking to build confidence or someone with experience wanting to challenge yourself in a different environment, Referee Abroad is a fantastic opportunity. It’s rare to find a programme that combines professionalism with such an inclusive, family-like community — but this one does exactly that. Highly recommended.+2Posted on Google![]()
