Referee Abroad is heading back to Asia — and we’re doing so in style.
Starting this year, we’ll be joining forces with one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing youth tournaments: the Borneo Football Cup, hosted in the stunning coastal city of Kota Kinabalu, in the Malaysian state of Sabah.
More than just a return, this marks a new chapter for us in Asia — and we couldn’t have picked a better place to begin.
A Unique Tournament in a Stunning Location
The Borneo Football Cup brings together youth teams from across Asia and beyond, offering days of exciting football in one of the most scenic locations you can imagine. Think palm trees, ocean breeze, and stadiums surrounded by tropical mountains — this isn’t your average tournament.
Now, referees will be right in the heart of it.
In collaboration with the Sabah Football Association, Referee Abroad will take the lead in managing all match officials for the event. Referees joining the tournament will not only experience a high-level international competition but will also get the chance to immerse themselves in a new football culture, build friendships across borders, and take part in the kind of adventure that makes refereeing truly special.
More Than a Tournament — A Step Back Into Asia
While the focus is on providing referees with a memorable and meaningful experience at the Borneo Football Cup, this also signals something bigger: Referee Abroad’s renewed commitment to Asia.
“We believe in Asia. We want to expand in Asia,”says Referee Abroad President Daniele Curcio.
“There’s so much talent and passion here — not just among players, but also referees. We’re excited to be part of that growth again.”
Before the pandemic, Referee Abroad regularly worked in China, hosting several successful tournaments. With the region opening back up, we’re actively exploring opportunities to return — and the Borneo Football Cup is a clear first step.
We also continue to strengthen ties with local federations, building on our cooperation with the Japanese FA, which has already sent officials to our events in Europe. We hope to welcome more Asian referees across our worldwide tournaments, while also supporting regional competitions like this one.
